COVID-19 in Long Term Care Homes
Older adults in long-term care have been a disproportionately at-risk population since the COVID-19 pandemic began. This vulnerability is attributed to several compounding factors. Firstly, older adults are known to be the highest-risk age group when it comes to experiencing the burden of COVID-19 disease. Secondly, the specific living conditions in long-term care facilities can further put residents at an elevated risk of infection. Staff and visitors pose threats to residents by bringing COVID-19 into facilities and exposing residents. Implementing certain protective measures and adhering to current vaccination recommendations can effectively mitigate the severity of the disease. Getting updated vaccinations is recommended for staff, visitors, and residents of long-term care facilities. Here, we review the role of COVID-19 vaccination in risk mitigation for older adults in long-term care.

Populations at Risk: COVID-19 and Asthma
For patients with underlying asthma, COVID-19 infection can lead to more severe outcomes. These outcomes can include increased risk for hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, readmission, and ventilation, especially for those with severe or uncontrolled asthma or comorbid chronic heart disease. It’s important to educate and protect this patient group by informing them of their increased risk factors and how to best manage them, including recommending vaccination and adhering to public health recommendations. Maintaining optimal asthma control is a critical aspect to ensure patient health through providing written asthma action plans, and escalating treatment according to guidelines.
